During its hearing yesterday, the Assembly Appropriations Committee delayed consideration of AB 558 by placing the bill in its Suspense File. The bill may or may not be heard during the Committee’s final hearing on May 26. If the Committee does not hear the bill on that date, the bill will not move forward to the floor of the Assembly or to the Senate.
“As currently written, AB 558 would require the addition of information regarding thousands of registrants to the public Megan’s Law website with no corresponding benefit to society,” stated ACSOL Executive Director Janice Bellucci. “ACSOL has opposed and continues to oppose AB 558.”
In addition, the language of AB 558 is inconsistent with language in the Tiered Registry Bill (SB 421) which is scheduled for consideration by the Senate Appropriations Committee on May 15.
So now is the time to start making those calls/writing those letters, right?

Janice is the expert and sees the big picture. She monitors what is going on with these important bills, always carefully taking many factors into consideration as she works out the most effective way to fight or support a bill. Then she lets us know when to write and the kind of things to say, as other social action groups do.
I know you guys want to take action, but sometimes it can actually have the opposite effect of that which we desire when we don’t know all the factors involved. Please hold off on writing and calling on bills until she sends an action alert with specific instructions.
That’s a big part of “we are all in this together”.
